turtle report August 2011
Posted on Aug 15th, 2011

The turtle patrol reports that as of August 9th, there were 2,121 nests and 2,853 false crawls on Manasota Key. For comparison, there were 1,647 nests and 2,427 false crawls in all of 2010. So this has been a much better year for the turtles. The largest concentration of nests ( 523 ) is between 7270 and 8210. Not surprisingly, there are far fewer south of the county line, probably as a result of more human activity and severe erosion.

Although the bulk of the nesting season is past, new nests continue to be found daily. And, of course, the hatchlings are now, or soon will be making their dash for the Gulf. It is critical that we do our part in this season. Remember, lights out, or properly shielded on the beach. Beach furniture, boats and other impediments should be off the beach at night. We are so fortunate to share our beach with these magnificent creatures. With that comes the responsibility to do our part to insure they are always part of manasota Key.
